Bird Bee - 2019 Commerce Design Finalist
Capitol Park, Detroit

As a new tenant at The Albert in Capitol Park in 2017, BIRD BEE faced the challenge of driving foot traffic to this redeveloping destination. For VD+B, the challenge was developing an appropriate layout for the store that would draw customers into the boutique as it was only sixteen feet wide and nearly one hundred feet deep. Furniture, tables, shelving, and especially the point-of-sale counter were arranged to pull customers deeper into the store and invite them to be apart of the BIRD BEE experience.

The name BIRD BEE represents two different styles: BIRD is the free-spirited bohemian-inspired woman (free as a bird); BEE is the edgy, rock n' roll or street-inspired woman (sting of the bee). The hexagons in the logo represent the two styles merging. Incorporating the hexagon shape into the interior build-out became an important element to the design. The hexagon, a six-sided shape, requires extreme precision and attention to detail when recreated, especially as a wood frame. The degree of care and craftsmanship in the millwork is evident throughout the store. The VD+B design team and shop team worked diligently with the owner to determine a modern and chic product, perfect, as BIRD BEE claims "for the expressive and edgy soul". Today, the hexagon is recognized as the brand for BIRD BEE, allowing the young boutique to stand out uniquely from its competition.

Testimonial:

"We created a true customer experience at Bird Bee by investing in good design. Every design element throughout the store elevates the overall look and feel of the space; it's not just "another boutique". Our customers have described the space as warm, inviting, and comfortable which is exactly what we wanted to offer to Detroit."
